Does money strengthen our social ties? longitudinal evidence of lottery winners

We study the effect of lottery wins on strength social ties and its different types, including support networks, in United Kingdom. On average, we find that winning more increases probability meeting friends most days, which is consistent with complementary income ties. The opposite true regards to held for instrumental reasons such as talking neighbours. Winning also lessens an individual network consistently a substitution network. However, further robustness checks reveal average effects are driven by individuals exhibiting very large only, thus suggesting small medium-sized (below £10k) may not be enough change people’s substantial way.
